How To Start Making Your Own Clothes

Making your own clothes can be deeply rewarding. There’s something satisfying about wearing garments that you created with your own hands and ingenuity. If you just got a new sewing machine and are a beginner, however, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are four beginning steps to creating your own clothes:

1. Take your measurements.

  • Unlike buying clothing from a department store, sewing patterns don’t come in small, medium, and large sizes. Instead, you’ll be using your own measurements to find a suitable pattern to fit your body type. Simplicity recommends wearing only your undergarments in order to get the most accurate measurements.
  • Get some flexible measuring tape. Measure the circumference around your bust, waist, and hips, and write down the number for each. These are the three most basic measurements that you will use when picking out a pattern to fit you.

2. Pick out a pattern.

  • Don’t pick something too complicated for your first foray into garment-making. It’s okay to challenge yourself, but you don’t want a pattern that is so difficult that you give up in frustration.
  • Try to choose simple patterns that don’t include buttons, zippers, or snaps. Shorts with an elastic waistband are a good first project for a beginner.

3. Choose your fabric.

  • This is one of the fun parts of making your own clothes. Go to a fabric store with your pattern and pick out cloth for your garment. The back of your pattern will tell you how much fabric you will need to complete your project.

4. Buy any additional supplies.

  • While you’re at the fabric store, don’t forget to buy thread for your project as well. Pick a thread that matches the fabric you will be using for your garment. If you’re feeling adventurous, however, you might choose a contrasting color for some visual interest.
  • Read the back of your pattern to find out if you need any additional supplies, often referred to as “notions.” Purchase any elastic, interfacing, or other notions that your pattern requires.

After following these four initial steps, you’re ready to start sewing. Make sure to read your pattern thoroughly and carefully before you begin. Sleep Smarter To Get A Better Night’s Sleep: 5 Tips

You need sleep. It helps keep you focused throughout the day, and allows your body to get the rest it needs. The problem is that not everyone can get the sleep required, due to stress, a bad mattress, or other reasons. The key is to sleep smarter, and with the tips below, you can get the sleep you need.

  1. ​Atmosphere. Your bedroom should be kept dark and quiet. It should be free from electronics and other work-related items. You can use a sleep mask to keep light completely out of your eyes and soothing music (such as nature sounds) to help you relax.
  2. Exercise. Exercising will help your body de-stress. It will also help give you energy all day long, which will help you to sleep throughout the night. Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day.
  3. No Stimulants. Try not to have anything with caffeine in it in the afternoon. Drink decaf coffee, soda without caffeine, or water instead. Before bed, drink chamomile tea to help you sleep.
  4. Sleep Only. Use your bed only for sleep. Do not use it for a place to do your work, or to think about your work. Also, if you aren’t tired, get up from your bed and do some light stretches, or take a soothing bath until you’ve relaxed enough to return to bed.
  5. Mattress. If you have an old mattress, it may be time to replace it with a newer one. Your lack of sleep may be due to a poor mattress. If you are waking up sore, if your mattress has indents from your body shape, or if it is lumpy or has broken springs, it’s time to replace it. Look for a mattress that has memory foam that comforts and caresses your body. Newer mattresses are made to provide better comfort and to provide a better night’s sleep.

Other Tips:

  • Don’t take daily naps if you aren’t sleeping throughout the night.
  • Prepare for your morning the night before. Get your clothes, make your lunch, etc. the night before.
  • Get outside for some fresh air daily. The sunlight and fresh air will help energize you throughout the day.
  • Watch what you’re eating throughout the day. Keep a food log, and pay attention to foods that you’ve eaten when you have slept better. Also, try and avoid snacking after 7 p.m. Some foods can make sleeping more difficult.
